Jury Matt Hansen

August 25, 1943 - June 30, 2023

Jury Matt Hansen passed away on June 30, 2023, he was 79. Matt was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by his daughter Tracy, son Brett and his wife Libby, his grandchildren Carter and Sloan; his sister Sirji Madli Puhvel and her husband Jaan, and their sons Peter, Andy and Marcus.

Matt was predeceased by his parents George and Tina Hansen, and his brother John.

Matt was born in Estonia August 25th, 1943. Near the end of World War II his family left Estonia and went first to Sweden, then England, and finally to London, Ontario, Canada, where the family was joined with many close family and friends from Estonia.

He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1966 and began a career in finance in Toronto, Ontario. After a long career as a hedge fund manager he retired to  California in 2000.

Matt treasured his family and friends. He had a passion for cooking, and could often be found in the kitchen making dinner for 3 or 30. When he moved to California he developed a love of golf, and could frequently be found at the local golf course with friends, shooting a round and telling jokes and stories. If he wasn’t in the kitchen or at the golf course, he could be found watching his grandchildren play baseball or soccer.

Those who knew Matt found him to be a friendly, outgoing guy who liked to smile, laugh and enjoy life. He could find humor in just about anything. He loved the sunshine and warm weather of California over where he grew up in Canada. Coming out west was dream come true for him.

Ted Gottsegen Something that will always make me laugh when I think of Mr Hansen happened at my expense. My family spent a lot of time with the Hansens in the early to mid 1980's and Brett and I hung out a lot. On a Sunday morning after a sleepover I was speaking with Mr. Hansen and he looked at me and said "If you woke up five minutes earlier you would've caught the guy that shit in your mouth" - I never again went downstairs in the morning without brushing my teeth.

Elliott Kuhn Matt was one of a kind. He had a wonderful mix of class, compassion and a love of the exquisite. It was an honor to spend time with him over the past few years. He was golfing buddy of my mom’s, but quickly became a friend and mentor to me. His humor and wit will always stay with me.
