James Norbert Long

November 13, 1941 - May 07, 2024

James Long, a cherished friend and beloved member of our family, passed away May 7 in Portland after a valiant battle with aggressive cancer. Born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, James distinguished himself academically and personally throughout his life. He earned his PhD in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, reflecting his deep passion for language and culture.

A true polymath, James possessed a piercing intelligence and a vast array of interests, which he explored with enthusiasm and depth. His generosity of spirit and steadfast nature made him a faithful friend and a pillar in the lives of those who knew him. He lived a life true to the values he espoused, leaving an indelible mark on his community and beyond.

We are heartbroken by his departure yet comforted by his belief in redemption and the possibility of peace and fulfillment in some kind of hereafter. James's legacy of kindness, wisdom, and curiosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. Let now thy servant, James, depart in Peace.

Thalia Johnson I worked with Jim at the Marina del Rey Social Security Office and was so impressed with his technical skills as a claims representative. He was such an interesting person with his knowledge of languages and how much fun he had hiking all over the mountains and canyons. He knew so much about music. He was always patient and kind especially when he knew I was having difficulties with work or personal problems. He was such a delightful person and I shall miss him so much. He really brightened my life for so many years. And I so enjoyed the kitten he gave me-Polgara had a wonderful life for 15 years..

Kay Noah I had the pleasure of working at Social Security Administration with Jim. Whenever I needed a ride to work because of one thing or another I could always count of Jim to come and pick me up. He loved the Gregorian Chants and exploring. I learned alot from listening to him talk about things. He was a very interesting person. I will miss him dearly. His spirit is at peace and when healed he will return
